Some medical knowledge. no harm reading. =)

STROKE IDENTIFICATION
During a BBQ a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured
everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just
tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and
got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid
went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband
called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital
(at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.)

She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ - had they known how to identify the
signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. It only takes a
minute to read this - Recognizing a Stroke ----- A neurologist says that if
he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the
effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke
recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is
tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps. Read and Learn.
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may
suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a
stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:

1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SAY A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently)
(example: "It is sunny today")

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately
and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group
of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and
speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three
questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke
Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test
could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent
brain damage.

you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

hahs, yea. tats to educate everyone of us.

todae in CVL, nearly witnessed a death. scary can. Lata was monitoring the ECG of the pat. n i tink, Dr B Kwok was doing cath, tat is to put a wire in to look at where is the blocked arteries. n somehow, i tink the catheter shld be in the artery for quite a period of time, causing the aortic pressure to be very low for quite sometime. then, the ECG morphology started to change. frm a normal ventricular beat to VF - ventricular flutter. n Lata was like stoned down there. coz she's unsure whether tat was made by artefacts or noise, or was it a genuine VF. i oso stunned there. Ruiwen and Thenmadi oso stunned down there. coz the ECG really looked weird. then, Lata suddenly turned to me n told me to call for help in a panicking tone. "Quick Quick! go call for help. VF! ask yvonne to come!" kan chiong can. i oso first time witnessed VF. frm V5000, i went over to 5000, but seemed like, 5000 pp knew wat happened, all rushed there. before i knew it, a nurse had shocked the patient wif a defibrillator. then slowly.. the ECG changed from VF slowly back to normal. at tat moment, i saw the patient had some painful expression on his face. scary can. Yvonne n XiaoYan were saying, "eh, painful u know. to be shocked by the defibrillator. Normally they will only shock the pat when they fainted." hahs. i tink by the time they defib the pat aft he had fainted, its too late le ba. later the ECG became one straight line more scary can. really.. Lata was saying tat the doc had taken action even before Lata could alert them.

p/s: VF when not taken action immediately will usually lead to death. tats y everyone kan chiong.

Yvonne was saying, "Actually they say tat if you are experiencing VF, u will actually be able to see ur body. coz its like, ur soul is floating upwards. About to die."

i wonder. it seemed interesting though. shld ask the doc some day how the patients actually feel when they are experiencing VF. hahs.

thank god the pat was safe and sound. phew. then came Dr A Wong. dots. tat time a previous case on a catheter being stucked in the artery of a pat, he oso kpo go in n see til he delayed his own procedure. juz now he oso kpo again. -.-" he had changed back to his clothes liaox, i guessed about to go home. then he came in, looked at the xray of wat Dr Kwok was doing. then he starting yakking. "Why go there? Lower abit. Ya about there about there." -.-" then i tink he really cannot stand it le, he went to take a radiation gown, dressed and went in the rm. funy thing is, w/in less than a min, he came out, undressed n left. -.-" really kpo sia. hahs go in the rm kena abit of radiation oso shuang ah. hahs. weird man indeed.

well, at least my itp was interesting and happening. but witnessing this kind of thing can be scary too.

Life is indeed precious. Treasure it. We wouldnt know if we can ever live to see the next sunrise each day. so... Cherish everyone tat u know! =D
